The ever-growing needs for cheaper, faster, and more reliable communication and data storage systems have forced many researchers to seek means to attain the ultimate limits on reliable information transmission and data storage. Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are currently the most promising coding technique to achieve the Shannon capacities (or limits) for a wide range of channels. LDPC codes were first discovered by Gallager in 1962 and then rediscovered in late 1990’s. Since their rediscovery, a great body of literature has emerged covering various aspects of these remarkable codes. Many of these codes have found their way in practical communications and their use in storage systems, such as hard disk drives and flash memories, seems to be This presentation gives an overview of recent developments of LDPC codes including code designs and constructions, encoding, decoding algorithms and applications in communication and data storage systems.
