Open Education Office (OEO) – First OCW Office in Taiwan

Open education is one of the mainstreams of modern education.  Since 2001, many top universities in the world have shared their open education resources by establishing diversified OpenCourseWares (OCW), which include video recordings of in-class lectures, lecture notes, assignments, exams and assessments.

 

In 2006, the College of Science at National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) started the initiative of OCW and organized a new team called the e-learning team. The e-learning team built three fundamental science OCW courses, i.e. Calculus, Physics and Chemistry.  In 2008, the e-learning team was officially established with the titile Open Education Office (OEO), supervised by the Academic Affairs Office.  The missions of OEO include implementing open education policy, integrating open educational resources, and installing NCTU OCW, which has become good education resources for self-learning students as well as good teaching aids for new teachers.  Furthermore, by editing and remixing NCTU OCW, OEO establishes open curriculums that serve as the bridge courses between high school and university.  In order to provide a more convenient learning service, OEO continues to improve the content and quality of OCW website platform, including the adjustment of website code designed for different mobile devices and cloud service.

 

OEO builds up 12~ 16 new NCTU OCW courses every year, which include fundamental courses, professional courses, common compulsory courses and general education courses, as well as 15~20 special lectures given at NCTU.  In 2012, our website won the Landmark Site Award for OpenCourseWare Excellence provided by OEC (Open Education Consortium), proving the significance of our performance.  

 

The existence of OCW may challenge traditional teaching; however, we choose to orient ourselves on the course of complementing the practices of modern education theories.  NCTU OCW does not only unlock educational resources of university, but also allows anyone to reuse, edit and remix OCW in order to fulfill their individual needs that include learning, teaching and research.  OCW reveals flexibility, diversity and initiative of open education resources.  We hope that OCW will encourage more people to start a self-learning journey, and then it will become a base for developing the whole-person and lifelong education.
